Parks have been a vital resource for almost everyone during 2020. With capacity limits set to restaurants and bars, individuals have taken it upon themselves to flock to nearby parks to enjoy midsummer picnics with friends and family. Luckily, Aspen has an abundance of them granting locals and visitors the ability to enjoy time outdoors. The below list includes the top five best parks in Aspen for a picnic.

Located in the heart of Aspen, this is a true winner for a variety of reasons. Many restaurants surround the park granting takeout easier than ever. Local favorites like New York Pizza, Red Onion, and Su Casa are just steps away. The central location makes it the perfect meeting place. Whether visitors are riding nearby RFTA, biking, walking, or driving. During certain times of the year musicians and sports fans can find entertainment. From Aspen’s annual Ruggerfest to music in the park. During the summer months families, frisbee fans, and golden hour fanatics fill the park.

John Denver Sanctuary

A true gem, this park is nestled next to the Roaring Fork River, and is also accompanied by a wetland garden filled with trickling streams and blooming flowers. Just a few blocks from central Aspen, this is a great place for those looking for a more meditative, relaxing experience. Featuring a song garden, with a variety of John Denver’s most beloved songs scripted on rocks. Take a stroll through this sanctuary and find a little bit of Rocky Mountain High. There are picnic tables for visitors to use. Theater Aspen and the Rio Grande Trail are within close proximity.

Herron Park

A  family favorite located near the East End neighborhood. Herron Park features a jungle gym and a shallow river area that is perfect for little ones to build sandcastles and play. It’s not uncommon to see the picnic blankets and towels scattered across the grass while families enjoy a relaxing summer day. Sitting next to the Rio Grande Trail this is a popular stop for bikers and dog walkers.

A few blocks west from downtown Aspen, this park offers something for everyone. Known for its sand volleyball courts, many come here for an evening pickup game or summer tournament. Nestled near the base of Aspen Mountain both the Ajax trail and Little Cloud trail are close by hikes. This park features both benches and picnic tables for visitors to enjoy.

Glory Hole Park

Located just east of the base of Aspen Mountain in a more residential area of town, many come here to enjoy a midday bite or evening sky. Walkable distance from grab-and-go eateries like Jour De Fète and The Butcher’s Block. There is an abundance of wood benches spread around a charming pond. It’s a calming park to enjoy.
